James R. Otteson is the Thomas W. Smith Presidential Chair in Business Ethics at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He grew up in Joliet, Illinois, graduated from the University of Notre Dame, and received his PhD from the University of Chicago. His specialties are philosophy, economics, and business ethics. His most recent book, The End of Socialism, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2014."
Many people today are suspicious of business, believing it to be driven by greed, exploitation, and other nefarious motives. Are they right to be suspicious? Or is there such a thing as honorable business that can provide value to the world? In this talk I will offer a model for understanding business's rightful, even noble, role in a humane and just society.
