For nearly 30 years, Les McCurdy has delivered a healthy dose of laughter to Florida's Southwest coast at his landmark Comedy Theatre and Humor Institute. In an industry isolated to two major markets of Los Angeles and New York City, Les and his wife Pam made the choice to do things differently and brought their dream of a tried and true comedy club right here in sunny Sarasota. Boasting an impressive line-up of world-renowned comedians, McCurdy's Comedy Theatre has a rich history of making this region laugh.
Les attended the University of Memphis and received a BFA in 1980. He toured on the national comedic circuit as a professional comedian for ten years appearing on Showtime and Comedy Central. He has been featured on numerous regional television and radio programs. Currently, Les is a regular guest on iHeartRadio Jones & Company, ABC 7 Suncoast View. He is a contributing writer for the Sarasota Herald Tribune. Over the span of his career, Les has appeared alongside some of the industry's greatest comics and entertainers, including Jerry Seinfeld, Jackie Mason, Kenny Rogers, Tim Allen, Billy Joel, Phyllis Miller, Bob Newhart, Tracy Morgan and Amy Schumer.
Running a successful business requires diversification, and McCurdy's is no exception. Les identified a need for real-world instruction for budding comics outside of the classroom and kicked-off a Humor Institute at the flagship theatre location. He also funded and developed a one-of-a-kind comedic training program for Intellectually Disabled adults called the Special O'Laughics, which was featured on PBS. A believer in the power of comedy in the areas of business and leadership and possessing a gift for melding the two, Les has worked with major business entities as a Corporate Comedic Trainer, including Comcast, FedEx, Pepsi Corporation, Fox Family Channel, Blue Cross Blue Shield, MTV, ESPN, Hilton Corporation and the American Business Women's Association.
